INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES FLYING WEST AFRICAN ROUTES

Although many international airlines fly Nigeria routes, only Delta Airline fly direct from Atlanta to Lagos Murtala Mohammed International Airport , Nigeria. I am not sure about other airlines flying direct to other West African countries. The following airlines would fly you through their home country before taking you to your destination in West Africa because of an IATA rules called "5th freedom rights" This simply means that a carrier can not carry a passenger from a foreign country to another foreign country. Therefore, KLM would take you to Amsterdam its home country before taking you to Nigeria.

B747 aircraft

This is the reason why British Airways would take you to London before taking you to any African country. This is a challenge to African countries if they would like  to compete in the global Tourism market; they must establish their own airlines that could fly from USA or Germany direct to African country. For now only South Africa has such opportunity. Nigeria has Virgin Nigeria but only flies from London  and some other African countries to Nigeria direct.

Here are some of the international Airlines flying African routes:

  • KLM Royal Dutch Airline thru. Amsterdam;
  • British Airways thru London Heathrow;
  • Lufthansa thru Frankfurt;
  • Air India,
  • Iberia Airline
  • South African Airways
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Kenya Airways
  • Ethiopian Airlines
  • Air France
  • Egypt Air etc,

The disadvantages for not having a direct fly to West Africa are many:

  • Flights are expensive
  • You would loose many hours in flight
  • Possibility of loss of baggage due to transfer at other airports are real
  • You may pay a whole lot more if you carry excess baggage
  • Issue of transit visa has been very troubling among passengers especially African travelers
